Ferrals - The Region
The region is renowned for his grapes growing, the wine produced is known worldwide as “Corbières” it’s a very full red wine, fruity and nutty, with liquorice taste at times, it’s mostly produced from Merlot & Shiraz.
Wine makers do produce some excellent white wines such as “Dry Muscat”, “Viognier”,
Between the Cathars’ invasion, as well as the Pilgrims on their way to St Jacques de Compostelle in Spain during the medieval time, both left a strong heritage that we still can see and enjoy namely, Monasteries, Churches, and Castles, abounds.
The proximity of the seashore, fish & shellfish, as well as some low mountainous area where cows, sheep, pigs are raised are the basis of some outstanding local dishes not to be found elsewhere. Needless to say restaurants, cafes, bistros, abound in this part of France.
Caught between Carcassonne and Perpignan the town of Tautavel (40kms W) presents and exhibit of more than 300 fossils gathered all over Europe, shown for the first time to the public, and spanning a period of approximately 2 millions years. A ride on the Canal du Midi, one of the World’s Heritage site, is also a must. Boats along the Canal can be boarded from many villages along its shores.
